Wondering where to take the kids during the hot summer months? Sharjah has the answer. There are limitless things to do with the family the entire year round in the third largest emirate of the UAE. So, plan for a range of exciting activities and maximise your fun in Sharjah!
Rain Room
Check out Rain Room, a unique modern art installation, offering an inspirational and magical experience for visitors. Walk through a downpour of continuous rain without getting wet…or take a towel for after because getting wet is part of the fun! Created by the London and Berlin-based Random International, the Rain Room is now permanently located in Sharjah. The installation has been displayed at the world’s most famous museums, including MoMA in New York and Barbican in London. The experience is centred around audience interaction, enveloping a person in water without wetting them. With 2,500 liters of self-cleaning, recycled water, the Rain Room uses trigger sensors to pause the falling water wherever it senses motion.
Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park
Speaking of getting wet… why not treat the family to a day at Al Montazah Amusement and Water Park, Sharjah’s number one family destination, offering thrilling water rides and popular leisure amenities.
Sitting tall on the emerald island of Khalid Lagoon, the park was built in 1979 – and still holds a special place in the hearts of its visitors. One of the very first adventure parks in the UAE, Al Montazah Parks have two exciting parks within its walls – Pearls Kingdom and Island of Legends. Immerse yourself in the magical world of Al Montazah Parks as you make your way through The King’s Palace, Mystery River, Flying Carpet, Sea of Treasures, and more.
Al Noor Island Butterfly House
Watch as the kids stand perfectly still hoping a butterfly will land on them at the stunning Al Noor Island Butterfly House where several species of butterflies can be found floating through the greenery. With temperature and humidity controlled interiors, the structure houses over 20 different species of butterflies, including the exotic Tailed Jay, Emerald Swallowtail, Pink Rose and Malachite. The house also has comprehensive information on the region’s native species. This destination has many fun things to do with kids in Sharjah, with a dedicated children’s area and an array of butterflies in different shapes, colors and sizes. Trying to spot camouflaged butterflies and watching newborns take flight are arguably among Sharjah’s most exciting summer activities for kids.
Sharjah Aquarium
Back to the water, this time spend a cool afternoon admiring the marine creatures living in our marine environment, a captivating world revealing beautiful clownfish, delicate seahorses, moray eels, sea rays and reef sharks at Sharjah Aquarium. It features 20 tanks that recreate different local aquatic environments, from coral reefs and rock pools to lagoons and mangroves. An indoor walkway allows up-close viewing of the marine animals in these habitats.
For a family experience, try timing your visit with a scheduled fish feeding time or talk. Children will be delighted to learn more about the sea creatures and play on the interactive displays. The aquarium should be on the top of any list of things to with kids in Sharjah, especially for children’s edutainment. Families in Sharjah often bring kids here to learn about local marine life.
Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation
Enjoy learning about the history of the region, art, culture, sciences, and Islamic discoveries at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation where 5000 artefacts from different parts of the Islamic world are displayed. Housed in building every bit as impressive as its collection, the museum is located on the Corniche, just north of the Heart of Sharjah district.
Astrolabes, manuscripts, ceramics and coins all vie for your attention, but don’t miss the gold-embroidered curtain for the door of the Holy Ka’ba and the mosaic inside the central dome detailing the zodiac constellations.
