There is much more to Sharjah than its bustling city centre and desert hinterlands. The third largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates is a dream destination for beach lovers and water sport enthusiasts visiting the UAE as it is the only emirate that boasts of two very special coastlines, the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
BEACHES
The beaches of Sharjah are among the most popular places to visit in the UAE. With beautiful blue coasts, any Sharjah beach is a delight to visit. They are ideal for getting out on the water and relaxing in the sun. Many have equipment for sea kayaking, sailing, windsurfing and jet-skiing, as well as loungers and umbrellas.
Try Al Khan for a quick break from the cityscape to views of the Arabian Gulf. In just a five minute walk from the beach, you can reach the Sharjah Maritime Museum and Sharjah Aquarium. Just south of here is the Mamzar beach, another place to enjoy the waves of the Arabian Gulf. You can also visit the emirate’s east coast territories – Dibba Al Hisn, Kalba and Khorfakkan – for even more choice.
KAYAKING
Kayaking is one of the activities that makes the best of Sharjah weather. And as one of the most popular water sports in Sharjah for friends and family alike, you are bound to find the perfect setting to take out a kayak. It is a wonderful way to get up close to nature and explore the coast and inshore waters – especially in Kalba. This mangrove forest is the UAE’s most famous wildlife sanctuary, home to a thriving ecosystem of rare animals and birds. Weaving your way through the forest, you may encounter turtles, crabs and even the critically endangered Arabian collared kingfisher.
DIVING
Sharjah’s east coast territory of Khorfakkan, one of the most popular Sharjah tourist places and weekend getaways in the UAE, is a must-visit for aspiring and seasoned divers alike. Its clear waters are home to an astounding array of marine species, coral life and even shipwrecks. There are plenty of prime spots within a 20 minute boat ride from the beach and numerous dive centres that organise outings and offer training courses.
DHOW CRUISES
On the east coast, tour operators offer dhow cruises that sail north from Sharjah’s Dibba Al Hisn. With a picturesque marina, this town gets its name from the landmark hisn or “fort” in English. The cape is dotted with green palm trees along shimmering blue waters, with a wealth of summer activities, including water sports like snorkeling. On a dhow cruise, you will travel along the coastline where steep cliffs rise out of the sea, and may even spot dolphins and turtles.
